Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure which augments the size, shape, or position of the ears. It is ideal for patients who feel their ears are too large, disproportionate, or prominent. This procedure, also known as “ear pinning,” involves the removal of excess tissue to permanently reduce protruding ears while also correcting underdeveloped cartilage folds. Otoplasty produces more natural-appearing ears in harmony with the rest of the face. It may be performed once the majority of ear development and growth has occurred (typically ~5 years old).

Procedure

Otoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and usually lasts 1-2 hours. While the exact technique depends on the needs of the individual patient, the procedure typically starts with a small incision made in the crease behind each ear. Dr. Yoo then carefully evaluates the depth of each ear concha (the cup of the ear) and anti-helix (the ear cartilage folds) before sutures are secured to reconstruct a more natural ear anatomy. Excess skin and cartilage are then removed and closed with dissolvable sutures. Once finished, the incisions are hidden discreetly in the crease behind each ear and patients may return home that same day. Sutures will be removed from the skin one week after surgery, and most patients feel comfortable returning to work in 1-2 weeks and may resume normal physical activities after 4-6 weeks. An elastic headband will be worn for the first week, and at night for two weeks thereafter.
